Training: How We Invest in Our Team (and Why It Benefits You)

A janitorial service is only as good as the people doing the work, so we invest heavily in our staff’s training and professional growth. Here’s what our training program looks like and why it matters.

Comprehensive Onboarding

Every new cleaner undergoes a thorough onboarding training before ever setting foot in your facility solo. This includes classroom-style instruction and hands-on training. We cover proper use of each piece of equipment, cleaning techniques for different surfaces, chemical safety (including reading MSDS sheets and proper dilution of concentrates), and site-specific protocols. New hires also shadow experienced team members as apprentices until they demonstrate competence in all tasks.

Safety Training

Safety for our employees and your facility is paramount. Josefina Morales, our Quality/Safety Manager, leads regular safety workshops. Topics include OSHA standards, how to safely handle bloodborne pathogens (important for medical facilities), ladder safety for higher work, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and how to correctly use and store cleaning chemicals. We conduct emergency drills (e.g., what to do if a fire alarm goes off while working, or how to respond to an accidental chemical spill) so our staff are prepared for the unexpected. A well-trained team in safety is less likely to have accidents – protecting both our workers and your property.

Customer Service & Professionalism

We train our team to be professionals on-site. That means wearing the UFG uniform with pride, being courteous to anyone they encounter, respecting confidentiality (for example, not reading documents on desks), and being responsive to any on-the-spot requests when feasible. We remind our cleaners that they are an extension of your team while in your building. Many of our clients comment on how friendly and polite our crews are – that’s a trained behavior, not an accident.

Ongoing Education

Cleaning methods and technologies evolve, and we keep our staff up-to-date. We host monthly training updates, which might introduce a new microfiber tool that improves dusting, or a new floor care technique, or a review of the latest CDC disinfection guidelines. We also use these sessions to reinforce quality standards by sharing audit results (celebrating what’s going well and constructively addressing any patterns of issues). Ongoing education keeps our team motivated and at the top of their game.

Specialized Certifications

Some of our team members pursue specialized training for advanced roles – for example, becoming certified carpet cleaning technicians, or obtaining a Green Cleaning Technician certificate, or learning to operate aerial lifts for high-rise window cleaning. We encourage and often sponsor these certifications. What that means for you is that when you need a specialized service, we likely have an in-house expert to handle it correctly.

Leadership & Oversight

Josefina and our site supervisors serve as coaches and mentors. They conduct on-site coaching: working side-by-side with cleaners to demonstrate the proper way and correcting any bad habits. This field coaching is part of training too – it’s continuous. Our supervisors also do surprise spot checks to ensure the crew is following their training consistently when unsupervised. The culture we instill is one of pride in workmanship. Many of our cleaners have been with us for years, some decades, because we treat them as skilled professionals and support their growth.

We might test a new eco-friendly product to see if it cleans just as well with an even smaller environmental footprint. We might implement a new app for our team to log their tasks and note any facility observations (like a faucet leak) that we can report to you. We regularly review our own performance metrics – if one account had a quality issue, we ask “what can we learn and apply everywhere from that?” This mindset means we don’t stagnate.
